Sam Howard commits to Nebraska in Class of 2027
The 215 pounder announced on Instagram, per The College Wrestling Report.
Sam Howard is headed to Nebraska. The College Wrestling Report posted the commitment as part of its Class of 2027 tracker, noting Howard announced on Instagram. He is an upper weight prospect, listed at 215 pounds.
MatScouts’ Big Board: #117 (#2 at 215)
The ranking is the part that matters. MatScouts has Howard at No. 117 on its Big Board and No. 2 at 215 pounds, which puts him near the top of a weight that feeds directly into the 197 and heavyweight end of a college lineup. For a Class of 2027 recruit, that is a verbal with a long runway in front of it.
What the report does and does not say
The College Wrestling Report's post is the full extent of the news right now. It lists the commitment, the school, the Big Board number and the weight ranking, and it credits the Instagram announcement. There is no quote from Howard, no mention of other schools he considered, and no detail on when he would arrive in Lincoln. Nobody has said what else was on his list.
That is worth being precise about, because big board numbers move. A No. 117 overall ranking in a class that is still more than a year from signing is a snapshot, not a final verdict, and Howard has another high school season or two to climb or slide on it. What is fixed today is the commitment itself and the weight he is ranked at.
Why Nebraska cares
Upper weight depth is the hardest thing to recruit and the slowest thing to build, and the Huskers now have a top two prospect at 215 pounds locked into their 2027 class. Getting that done this early, before the class fills in around him, is the kind of move that lets a staff recruit the rest of the board differently.
Watch for where MatScouts has Howard the next time the Big Board updates, and for the rest of Nebraska's Class of 2027 to take shape around him.
