Maroulis beats Raimova 5-2 for 57kg World bronze

Her ninth Senior World medal, and Team USA's second bronze in Astana.

Helen Maroulis beat Kazakhstan's Nilufar Raimova 5-2 to win World bronze at 57kg in Astana. USA Wrestling called it a hard-fought decision and confirmed it as her ninth Senior World medal. Counting her Olympic hardware, it is the 12th World or Olympic medal of her career.

How she got to the podium

Maroulis opened by teching Canada's Friesen 11-0. She then ran into Japan's Sena Nagamoto in the quarterfinals and fell 4-2, which dropped her into repechage. She pinned Ecuador's Valverde there to reach the bronze medal match, then handled Raimova on Mat C.

That is the shape of a tournament for a wrestler who has been doing this for a decade plus. One bad period in the quarters against the eventual finalist, then three wins and a medal anyway.

Where the 12 come from

Justin Basch broke down the career ledger after the match. Nine World medals, four of them gold, plus three Olympic medals including one gold.

9 World medals (4 gold) and 3 Olympic medals (1 gold). One of the greatest to ever do it.

It is also Team USA's second bronze of the tournament, back to back with Dymond Guilford, per Basch.

Nobody has said anything about what comes next for Maroulis. For now the number that matters is 12.
