Nagamoto beats Maroulis 3-2, ends her 57kg world reign
A late takedown from the U23 World silver medalist took out the reigning 57kg world champion.
Sena Nagamoto of Japan beat Helen Maroulis 3-2 at 57kg, ending Maroulis's reign as world champion at the weight. Nagamoto, a U23 World finalist, scored a late takedown for the win. United World Wrestling confirmed the result, posting that Nagamoto "ends Helen MAROULIS reign as world champion at 57kg."
The call from the mat
GlobalWrestOrder framed it as big as anything women's freestyle has produced, calling it "One of the biggest upsets in Women's Wrestling HISTORY" and the biggest win of Nagamoto's career by far. The account also noted Maroulis's Olympic title, a reminder of what Nagamoto went through to get the three points.
One of the biggest upsets in Women鈥檚 Wrestling HISTORY
The margin tells the story on its own. Nagamoto trailed on the scoreboard and needed the late takedown to flip it, and a 3-2 win over a wrestler of that resume is the kind of result that reorders a bracket and a weight class in one match.
What it means at 57kg
Maroulis has been the measuring stick at 57kg for years, and the defending champion is now out of the title picture at the weight. Nagamoto arrives at the senior level with a U23 World silver already on her record, and she now owns a win that every other wrestler at 57kg has to account for.
Our take: a U23 finalist beating the reigning world champion by one point in the closing seconds is the clearest signal yet that 57kg has a new tier at the top, and Japan is the country that put it there.
Neither source gave a round or a bracket path beyond the result itself, so the rest of Nagamoto's day is still to be filled in.
Watch for how far Nagamoto goes in the bracket from here, and whether Maroulis gets pulled back in through repechage depending on where Nagamoto finishes.
