Rodriguez-Dobler pins Cayir for U23 World gold at 53kg
The Doane three-time NAIA champ needed less than a period in the final and now heads to Senior Worlds in Astana.
Cristelle Rodriguez-Dobler is a U23 World champion at 53kg. She pinned Turkey's Sevval Cayir in under a minute in the Las Vegas final, per Justin Basch, who posted her full bracket run. It is the second World title of her career after U20 gold in 2024.
Christian Pyles called it a "First period pinfall for GOLD." FloWrestling confirmed the finals pin as well.
First period pinfall for GOLD.
The run
Rodriguez-Dobler beat China's Xiaotong Zeng 6-2 in the round of 16, then India's Sweety 11-2 in the quarterfinal. In the semifinal she edged Ukraine's Anastasiia Polska 3-1, a one-point match that was the closest anyone came to her in Las Vegas. Then the final lasted less than a period.
Basch notes she is a three-time NAIA champion out of Doane, which makes the gold medal stand out on a US women's freestyle roster stocked with Division I and Senior-level names.
What's next
She does not get much rest. Basch says Rodriguez-Dobler heads to Senior Worlds in Astana later this month, so the 53kg gold in Las Vegas is a warmup for the biggest tournament on the calendar rather than the end of her year.
The title adds to a strong week for the American women in Las Vegas. Kylie Welker won her third straight U23 World title at 76kg without giving up a point all tournament, and the US had multiple women reach the semifinals on the same side of the bracket sheet.
Two things to watch. First, how Rodriguez-Dobler's 53kg form carries to Astana against a Senior field. Second, whether the NAIA pipeline gets any more credit after a three-time Doane champion walked through a World bracket with one close match in four.
Our take. The semifinal with Polska was the real test, and a 3-1 win there followed by a sub-minute pin in the final says she wrestles better the longer the tournament goes.
It's the second World title of her career after U20 gold in 2024.
