Ferrari's 3-2 win over Mesenbrink at Super 32 resurfaces
A consolation bracket match from 2021 has fans asking who wins if the two meet at 174 in 2027.
GlobalWrestOrder resurfaced Angelo Ferrari's 3-2 win over Mitchell Mesenbrink at the 2021 Super 32, a match that happened in the consolation rounds. Ferrari got the deciding takedown in the third period and, per GlobalWrestOrder, things got heated at the end. The account framed it as a measure of how tough the Super 32 is, given that a freshman NCAA All-American and a two-time NCAA champion once met on the back side of that bracket.
The 2027 hypothetical
GlobalWrestOrder put the question out there directly, asking who wins if the two met in 2027 at 174 pounds. FloWrestling took the same thread from the other end on FRL, pointing out that Ferrari has not given up a takedown in his first two college seasons and asking whether Mesenbrink would be the one to get to his legs.
That is the whole matchup in one sentence. Ferrari's defense against the offense of the wrestler GlobalWrestOrder called a future number one pound for pound Hodge Trophy winner. Nobody has announced anything, and no date or event has been attached to the idea.
Why it travels
The appeal is the gap between then and now. In 2021 these two were trading a one-point decision in a consolation bracket at a high school tournament. Since then Mesenbrink has won two NCAA titles and the Hodge, and Ferrari has made the NCAA podium as a freshman while, per FloWrestling, keeping his takedown column clean through two seasons.
Our take, the shutout stat is the part that makes the hypothetical worth arguing about. A wrestler who has not conceded a takedown in two college seasons is the exact test case for an offense as heavy as Mesenbrink's, and 174 is where the conversation would land if both end up there.
What to watch for, whether either side says anything about 174 in 2027, and whether the two actually line up at the same weight.
And of course - things got heated at the end!
Angelo Ferrari hasn’t given up a takedown in his first two college seasons.
