Iowa State commit Von Gonten visits Iowa this weekend

Landri Von Gonten committed to Iowa State a week ago and is on an official visit to Iowa City this weekend, per Ross Bartachek. Also: the RAF 13 card is locked for Miami, and Christian Pyles is torn on Marcus Blaze at 133 or 141.

Big news

RAF 13 card locked for Miami Sept 18, Undiscovered winner debuts

Fox Nation is streaming 'RAF Undiscovered: The Hunt For Wrestling's Next Star' on September 16, 12 wrestlers competing for one spot, and the winner makes his RAF debut two days later at RAF 13 in Miami. Justin Basch posted the locked RAF 13 card for 9/18, matchups in the graphic. The Wrestling Nomad asked whether RAF's North Star is paying wrestlers or determining who the best in the world are.

12 wrestlers. One opportunity.

Why it matters: Miami is the next RAF card and the Undiscovered winner adds an unknown to it. Our take: Nomad's question is the one fans will keep asking as the promotion adds a streaming-series pipeline on top of its cards.

What to watch for
  • Sept 16: RAF Undiscovered streams on Fox Nation
  • Sept 18: RAF 13 in Miami

Recruiting, transfers, coaching

Iowa State commit Von Gonten visits Iowa this weekend, per Bartachek

Landri Von Gonten committed to Iowa State a week ago and is now taking an official visit to Iowa City this weekend, per Ross Bartachek. The Texas native is a U17 World silver medalist and No. 3 in the P4P rankings. Bartachek also reports Eve Skrocki, the former Dubuque Wahlert standout, Fargo champ and U17 World Team member, will be in Iowa City the same weekend after attending RTC practices in the Iowa room this summer.

Why it matters: Our take: an official visit is not a flip, but it puts Iowa State's hold on a top-three P4P women's recruit in question. It also stacks Iowa's visit weekend with a second U17 World Team member.

What to watch for
  • Whether Von Gonten's Iowa State commitment holds after the Iowa City visit
  • This weekend: Von Gonten and Skrocki both on campus at Iowa

Takes and analysis

Pyles keeps Marcus Blaze at 133 but sees a 141 path

Christian Pyles says Marcus Blaze could move up to 141 this college season and set himself up for the 65kg world team in April, but the catch is holding 61kg (134) until Worlds end in November and then adding size for the NCAA season, which is why Pyles still has Blaze at 133. Brax Bandito argued Blaze already handled 65kg last year when he beat Bassett 5-1, and Pyles conceded he is torn since both weights have fun storylines with Blaze in the mix. Also circulating: @globalwresorder posted 'If he fears Bassett just say that bro' and Pyles posted 'How silly do you feel when you say things this nonsensical?' Our take: those two read like the same Blaze and Bassett argument, but neither post names its target.

I think Marcus Blaze could move up and have success at 141 this year and put himself in a prime position to make the 65kg world team in April next year.

His body is begging to put on weight. He easily transitioned to 65kg last year when he beat Bassett 5-1.

Why it matters: Whether Blaze lands at 133 or 141 reshapes the preseason picture at two college weights, and the 61kg to 65kg question decides how he sets up for the April world team run.

What to watch for
  • Whether Blaze stays at 61kg through Worlds in November or moves up before the NCAA season
