Hidlay loses 92kg World final, Pyles says it was stolen
Christian Pyles says Hidlay scored more than his Russian opponent and got shorted on the edge calls.
Trent Hidlay lost the 92kg final at the Senior World Championships, and the officiating became the story within minutes of the whistle.
Christian Pyles said Hidlay was awarded two step outs for what was one clear takedown, and that a second takedown on the edge should have been scored as continuation. Pyles also said the Russian stepped out completely and that the call never came.
"Last match of the day absolutely stolen," Pyles wrote. "All the winning for USA is amazing, but Trent was better and scored more."
The edge calls
The Wrestling Nomad posted a clip of a sequence with the caption "Both feet out." He followed it by saying he still thinks Hidlay is the best 92kg wrestler in the world.
Both feet out.
Neither account reported a final score, and United World Wrestling has not said anything publicly about the calls in the match. Nobody has said whether the US corner challenged the sequences in question.
Where it leaves the day
The loss lands on a day when the American men were otherwise piling up results in Astana, which is exactly the contrast Pyles drew. The US had come into the final session ahead of Russia in the team race with golds still on the line, so a silver at 92kg still counts in the points column even if the way it arrived does not sit well with anyone watching.
Our take: 92kg has been a weight where Hidlay keeps running into the same wall at the top of the bracket, and a final decided on edge interpretation rather than a clear gap is the version of that story that stings most.
What to watch: whether United World Wrestling or USA Wrestling addresses the sequences Pyles flagged, and whether any footage of the two edge calls gets an official explanation.
Last match of the day absolutely stolen.
I still think Trent is the best 92kg wrestler in the world
