Spencer Lee won the 57kg World title on a torn ACL. In his post-match press conference, Lee revealed he tore the knee for the fourth time about three months ago and had not been on a mat in 16 weeks, per @justinjbasch. He said he almost gave up his spot.

He did not wrestle like it. Lee teched four of his five opponents in Astana and came back from down 10-5 to pin his way through the semis before taking gold at 57kg. That is a five-match run from a wrestler who, by his own account, had been off the mat for four months heading into the tournament.

Surgery, and an uncertain next year

Lee says he will probably need surgery, and he does not know if he will be back next year, per Basch. He put the rest in one line.

"I'm 28 years old. I don't got many more tears left in me."

That is the piece that matters beyond the medal. Lee's injury history has shaped every stretch of his career, and this time the knee gave out roughly three months before the biggest tournament of the senior season and he medaled gold anyway.

The gold caps the run that put him in the 57kg final opposite Roman Bravo-Young, which we covered earlier.

Our take: a fourth ACL tear at 28, with surgery likely and no commitment to next season, makes this the kind of World title that gets re-read later. Nobody has said what a timeline back would look like, and Lee himself did not offer one.

What to watch: whether Lee confirms surgery, and whether he makes any call on 2027 once he does.
