Shumate medically defaults at U23 Worlds with pec injury

The Ohio State wrestler had already teched Turkmenistan and rallied past Ukraine 14-7 earlier in the day.

Seth Shumate's day at the U23 World Championships ended with a medical default. The Ohio State wrestler was leading 7-1 when he hurt his pec, per Christian Pyles, who reported that Shumate tried to keep wrestling and then could not continue. He had to default with a large lead.

It capped a run that had him looking like one of the best stories of the American men's freestyle tournament. Shumate opened by making quick work of Dovletgeldi Myradov of Turkmenistan, earning a 10-0 tech in the first period, according to WIN Magazine.

The comeback that preceded it

Then came the round of 16. FloWrestling reported that Shumate scored 14 straight points to come back from a seven point deficit, and WIN Magazine described the arena on its feet as he closed out a 14-7 win over Ukraine. That is the kind of match that usually sets up a medal run, not the end of one.

Instead the next match was over on the trainer's table. Pyles called it a sad finish, and nobody has said anything further about the severity of the injury or what the recovery timeline looks like.

What is left unsaid

There has been no word from Ohio State or from Shumate himself. No timeline, no diagnosis beyond the pec, and no indication of whether this affects his folkstyle season for the Buckeyes. Until someone puts a number on it, the only confirmed detail is that he was up 7-1 and could not finish.

Our take: the 14-7 win over Ukraine is the tape that matters here. Coming back from down seven in a World-level freestyle match, scoring every point the rest of the way, is not something that happens by accident, and it is the part of this day that should carry forward whenever he is healthy again.

What to watch for: any update from Ohio State on the pec injury, and whether Shumate is available for the start of the Buckeyes' folkstyle season.
