Ryleigh Sturgill commits to Iowa women, No. 5 at 105

The Tennessee lightweight is the latest addition to the Hawkeyes' 2027 class.

Ryleigh Sturgill has committed to Iowa, per Ross Bartachek, who reported the Tennessee product is joining the Hawkeyes' 2027 recruiting class.

Sturgill was ranked No. 5 overall at 105 pounds in the last MatScouts rankings. Bartachek framed the pickup simply, writing that it is "Iowa adding another talented lightweight."

That is the piece Iowa keeps stacking. The Hawkeyes have been busy at the bottom and top of the women's lineup in recent weeks, with Brooke Huffman, the top-ranked 190 pounder, and Bixby's Larra Mullin both announcing for the program. Sturgill adds a nationally ranked name to the lightest end of the women's folkstyle weights, where 101 and 109 are the scoring real estate every contending roster has to cover.

What the announcement does and does not say

Bartachek's post is the full extent of what has been reported. There is no listed high school, no club affiliation and no timeline beyond the 2027 class. Nobody has said what the recruiting process looked like, which other programs were involved, or where Sturgill projects to compete at the college level. Her No. 5 ranking is at 105 pounds, a high school weight, and no source has said what she will weigh in at for Iowa.

What is concrete is the ranking and the class year. A top five recruit at the weight is the kind of addition that holds up at the national tournament, and Iowa continues to recruit as a program that expects to be in the team race rather than one filling out a bracket.

Our take, the pattern matters more than any single commitment here. Iowa women's wrestling is landing ranked recruits across the weight range in the same stretch, and 2027 is starting to look like a class built to score at multiple spots rather than lean on one or two headliners.

Watch for where Sturgill settles, 101 or 109, and whether Iowa keeps adding to the 2027 group.
