Connor Mirasola moving to heavyweight at Penn State

Cael Sanderson confirmed the move to Zach Seyko, setting up a weight-class overlap with Cole Mirasola.

Connor Mirasola will compete at heavyweight for Penn State this season, Cael Sanderson said, per Zach Seyko. His twin brother, Cole, was the Nittany Lions' starter at heavyweight last season. That puts both Mirasolas at the same weight in the same room.

Neither brother has left to find a clearer path. That is the part that got the reaction online, because the obvious solution to two wrestlers at one weight is usually one of them going somewhere else.

Nobody has said how the spot gets settled

Sanderson's comment, as reported by Seyko, covers the weight and nothing more. There is no public word on how Penn State plans to sort out the starting job at heavyweight, whether one brother redshirts, or whether the staff intends to let it play out in wrestle-offs. If a decision has been made internally, it has not been reported.

What is confirmed is the setup. Connor is at heavyweight. Cole held the heavyweight spot a season ago. Both are still in the Penn State room.

The internet noticed immediately

@globalwresorder summed up the reaction to two brothers choosing to stay put rather than split up over a weight class.

Our take: the headline here is less about the depth chart and more about the fact that a program with this much talent keeps producing these logjams, and wrestlers keep choosing to stay in the room and sort it out instead of hitting the portal.

Things to watch

Penn State's wrestle-off results and the first lineup card of the season, which will show which Mirasola gets the heavyweight spot.

Any clarification from Sanderson on whether one of the twins takes a redshirt year.

Until then, treat everything beyond the weight assignment as unconfirmed. The only sourced facts are that Sanderson said Connor goes heavyweight, that Cole started there last season, and that both are still Nittany Lions.
